Artist’s Statement
My work has always been about the manifestation of aesthetic line.
Line, which makes form, is an important part of my works. I use the technique of slip casting because the line which the plaster mold employs is freer, more delicate and sophisticated than the other techniques in ceramics. I utilize characteristics of plaster, which changes from soft to hard material. Before the plaster changes, I make the original model by utilizing action of hand and right moment. This evokes more possibility of forms and lines. According to the “In praise of hand”, Henri Focillon said the hand of artist has peculiar power for creation. The hand means action: it creates and at times it even seems to think. I am inspired by action of my hands and physical force. I transform the balloon into the specific form and line. My idea of form comes from the line that is made by a balloon. After I blow the balloon, I pour the plaster through a funnel into the inflated balloon as fast as I can. Before the plaster hardens, I make a specific form by pressing an object like a block or hands spontaneously into the balloon. Sometimes I twist, stretch and tie the balloon with the string, as I basically play with the form I originally imagined. Although a specific shape or form is intended, the results may vary thus causing unexpected form and line on the balloon. I create an image of teapot. It is made by forming various shapes with harmony and balance. Teapot is not functional. I just use the physical characteristics of a teapot like a spout, handle, body, and lid. I am delighted with combining relationship between proportion and combination of form. I can produce multiple teapots, but each teapot is not the same. As God makes human face, I utilize diversity, making some of them stand, lie down or hang on the wall. I reproduce diverse and whimsical object from the image of teapot.
